Have you ever tried free standing lace Friends? It is so easy and so much fun. For those of you new to this, let me give you a quick overview on how to do free standing lace.
You need the following:
- A Free Standing Lace embroidery design. Make sure your design states Free Standing Lace or FSL for short.
- Water soluble or wash-away stabilizer. Choose the fibrous type, not the film plastic type.
- Bobbin thread in colors to match the top thread.
What you DON’T need:
- Fabric!
Free standing lace is stitched directly on the water soluble stabilizer. There is no fabric involved. The stitches themselves are created in a way to interlock. Now you might think all sewing stitches interlock, but not so! This is important, make sure the design you choose states “Free Standing Lace” or “FSL”.
I like to hoop two layers of stabilizer. There are a lot of needle penetrations so you don’t want your stabilizer to tear half way through the design.
It is also nice to have your bobbin thread color match the top thread color.
Free standing lace is beautiful for tags, Christmas ornaments, clothing embellishments and more.
